“In Grade Six, I calculated it would be 12 years until “I was free,” by which I meant I would be done with my formal education. Since that moment I made note of places I would travel to when this freedom came: Nubian Rock Churches, the Trophy of Augustus, Lake Turkhana, Mount Erebus, Eldorado. This list represents all the places I would visit in “The Year of Travel.”
Fast forward 12 years and I am finished school. The Year of Travel begins a few weeks later in London, England. From there I make my way northwards to the Holy Island of Lindisfairne, walk Hadrian’s Wall, and head farther north to the windblown heaths and bogs of the Shetland Islands. But something inside me changed when I was at Lindisfairne, looking out over the tidal flat to the scenic castle. My heart was no longer in it. I was drawn home. I turned the words of a mentor over in my mind as I flew on the Paris-Montreal leg of my return flight. This mentor told me it was possible to “travel constantly by finding wonder and novelty in your daily routine.” I decide to give this a try when I arrived home.
Within days of being home I was walking through my neighbourhood, past places I had been to thousands of times before. I went for walks at night; savoring the solitude and quiet. Walking through a very familiar environment, but seeing it with new eyes; the eyes of a traveler looking for wonder and novelty all around me.
With text, photos, diagrams, maps, and sculptures this mixed-media journal and exhibition documents 138 night walks that I took over the course of 2010-2011 in Applewood Acres.” – Geoff Christou
