Cardboard Giraffe

“Over 90 billion cardboard boxes are discarded every year.

A couple of years ago, my daughter came to me to help her with a school art project. Her brief was to design and build something with crafts and present it to her class. She originally wanted to design a doll house, but I encouraged her to think bigger. I wanted her to think outside of the metaphorical box and do something that will make an impact.

She came up with the concept of a giraffe, using cardboard from Interfaceflor carpet sample packaging we had seen on a recent visit to my office.

I tried to inspire her to dream big, but she actually inspired me. As a 10 year old, she probably wasn’t thinking about the sustainability of recycling, but in her intuitive mind she thought about the bigger potential for those cardboard boxes. Although at the end it was only a cardboard giraffe, she made me realize that if we dream a tiny bit bigger, we all have the potential to make an impact in the world, even if that impact is very small.

For DesignTO, we are going to dream even bigger and have teamed up with Interfaceflor and Save the Giraffes to raise awareness to protect their habitats. The world’s giraffe population is rapidly shrinking and we at SDI believe in the importance of protecting our world through design.”
