The circus series (2015)
Like the well received Rhizomes collection in 2013,Khaled El Mays’s new collection, Circus, builds on the same simplicity and design foundations of his studio, from constantly working and supporting local artisans to experimenting conceptual grounds based on selective repetitions and iterations. In his choice of the circus, khaled focused on very selective qualities of this playful yet hard environment. We mention from these, the staged luxury aspect, the moving aspect, the necessity of multi use and functionality while preserving simplicity, the visual shock and the repetitive aspect. Atelier Khaled El Mays’s circus series came to be divided into three visual and typological sets.
The audience set
This set’s design inspiration comes from the audience of a circus, creating pieces for them, like benches/bars, chairs, tables … all pieces in this set reflect a staged luxury, an aspect that has a majestic side, visually powerful and somehow pleasantly violent on the eye, the audience of this circus is as much part of the show as the people and objects on stage. All pieces from the audience set are imagined to elevate the user to become an attraction point without blocking interactions, but in fact enhancing them while also preserving personal space..
The stage set
Influenced by the stage of a circus, this set introduces anew typology that has a rich mix of metal work, woodwork and fabric, with a necessary gypsy feel. Conceived to be appreciated from each side, the set grows more colorful. Seating elements, floor lamps and coffee tables, are the main pieces. The outcome is greatly customizable, therefore the infinite possibilities of finishes gives this set the ability to achieve a variety of looks within the same design. The metal module created also allows for a large number of Iterations and morphing.
