Description

A series of eye-catching, laser-cut panels are suspended in windows. The rigid material of the cut forms are juxtaposed against a sea of soft-cross stitching over the face of the panels. This unexpected contrast of materials modernizes the classic art of cross stitching while the increased scale brings attention to the traditional way they are methodically executed.

Hemlock and Mayne draw inspiration from a wide range of classic patterns, and present them in a fresh new light. Colour is used liberally to execute the pattern, but also to create a bright and cheerful moment during one of Toronto’s darkest months. Colour and geometry also serve to unify the series of panels across multiple planes.

The installation is an exciting exploration of colour, pattern, and texture that will celebrate the art of craft on an architectural scale. This project is the first of many from the team, which are intended to manifest a passion for fibre arts and to bring these techniques out of the personal realm and into the public.
