Description

Inspired by traditional Chinese garden aesthetics and the natural beauty of Canadian islands, such as Fogo, ‘Collection O’ is the first offspring of Toronto-based studio Hi Thanks Bye. Formed in 2017 by Chinese-Canadian duo Stein Wang and Topher Kong, Hi Thanks Bye was nominated for the Rising Star Award with their inaugural collection at the 2018 Stockholm Furniture Fair ‘Greenhouse’ – the area of the fair dedicated to emerging designers and design schools.

‘Collection O’ consists of six pieces of minimalist sculptural furniture in deep forest green matte finish. The entire collection is constructed using contemporary cold-rolled steel sheets and tubing juxtaposed by traditional, handmade textile. The combination of industrial and traditional techniques demonstrates the versatility and resourcefulness of the young designers, who supervised the whole production process with manufacturers and artisans in China and Canada.

This new collection is available as a shelf-divider, dining chair, side table, area rug, bar stool and floor lamp. With its timeless simplicity, ‘Collection O’ is a tribute to the studio’s cross-cultural roots, celebrating their adoptive country, Canada, and their country of origin, China, in equal terms, while exuding an aesthetic of tactile charm and visually superior craftsmanship. For this installation at 30 St. Clair Avenue West, the designers want to create an indoor garden with greeneries and furniture pieces embedded in between. Visitors are encouraged to walk through the installation and experience the harmonious relationship between organic and man-made objects.

Join us on Sunday, January 20 for a multi-sensory walk-through as part of DesignTO Tours: Exploring Art at Yonge + St Clair!

The original OO area rug was in collaboration with textile designer Avis Ho.
