The show will include beautifully designed quilled artwork from years of learning from both their mother’s and father’s lineage. The quilled patterns are based on traditions that are continued today throughout the Georgian Bay First Nations. Also included in the show will be paintings, sculptures, and birch bark canoes inspired by the scenery, experience, and memories of Georgian Bay and 30,000 islands.
G’zaagin Art Gallery is run by Tracy Pawis. Tracy resourcefully uses all of nature’s materials, and finds creative ways for people to experience natural products. The quillwork featured in this exhibition has been harvested, cleaned, dried, and stored for the following years’ projects. It takes time and effort to gather all material, and five generations of learning. Tracy continually works toward teaching others this skill.
Negig Gallery is run by David Pawis. An Ojibway of North America, David is a member and resident of Wasauksing First Nation, Ontario, Canada. As a child, David was very enthusiastic about arts and crafts, and learned traditional skills from his mother, and elders of his first nation. David excelled at art classes in school. His passion for art and creating continued through his teens, and he went on to attend Sheridan College program of Art Fundamentals in 1976-77. Primarily self-taught, David’s paintings, sculptures, carvings, leather, and birch bark work manifest his love for nature, landscapes, traditional teachings, and folklore. His greatest teacher and inspiration is mother earth from which everything comes. Living on pristine shores of Georgian Bay in the 30,000 islands is inspirational, and much of David’s art depicts scenery found around the bay.
