Andrew Hunter, Fredrik S. Eaton Curator of Canadian Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario, will join Lyn Carter in the gallery for a conversation about her influences for this major new body of work. They will consider how the artist’s relationship to her immediate surroundings – a rural environment where buildings and roads intersect with cultivated fields and southern Ontario horizon lines – has provided the ideal subject for her graphic explorations.
Titled after the rural road where artist Lyn Carter lives and works, this exhibition explores one of the most fundamental textile design elements – the stripe – and its graphic relationship to the landscape, evoking horizon lines, road grids and furrowed fields. Integrating historical artifacts from the Textile Museum of Canada’s international collection that highlight the complex spatial organization of lines, bands and stripes, the artist’s highly crafted sewn sculptures, drawings on paper, video and digitally printed fabric are poetic translations of the rhythms and patterns of personal space and vernacular architectures that are part of daily experience.
