Description

Change demands attention. As the intersection of Yonge + St Clair transforms, its metamorphosis has altered the way people use the space. Passersby must reconcile their paths of travel with hoarding and construction. Office workers, residents and visitors alike are encouraged to participate in pop ups, cultural experiences and art installations. The neighbourhood is in the midst of a living and organic transformation and, with that, comes a difference in use.

‘Morpheus’ overtakes the 2 St. Clair West office buildings main lobby at Yonge + St Clair, imposing constant movement within a confined physical space. Its transformation from one form to another is invocative of the shifts in the surrounding area, encouraging active participation and use of the sculpture as it morphs. Like a neighbourhood in transition, the installation will change in aesthetic, change in use and change in form—a living, breathing choreography of transformation.

As a key player in the design of Yonge + St Clair’s recent revitalization, the team at Gensler has an intimate understanding of how these developments have affected people. ‘Morpheus’ lives as a celebration of the excitement and delight that comes with change, while also encouraging reflection on what is different or altered in transition.

‘Morpheus’ encourages reflection of the liminal space between one state of being and the next, and celebrates the process of change while acknowledging the trepidation inherent in change.
