Oji Masanori is without a doubt one of Japan’s most important and internationally recognized contemporary designers. He has made a career translating the qualities and emotions of traditional Japanese handcraft into relevant contemporary industrial design objects.
Mjolk will be hosting their third retrospective exhibition of Oji Masanori during the 2016 Toronto Design Week Festival. This year is particularly special because Mjolk has commissioned a collection of tableware and lighting designed by Oji Masanori to be produced in collaboration with local Canadian artisans and small producers. These objects act as a symbol of cooperation between two cultures, both with strong connections to nature.
“I design a variety of Japanese handicrafts of medium-scale production as demanded in this day and age.
I do product design, graphic design, and branding in an integral way.
My designs are derived from the history of handicraft, and I do so making sure handicraft continues to prosper in the coming years.”
– Oji Masanori
