Bigger and Better: ‘U [can] 2’ builds on the success of last year’s IKEA Hacking Symposium — the Cure for The Common Designer. Come see Designer IKEA Hacks and let’s ponder the Future of Furniture Design together. (The biggest names in design are jumping on the bandwagon too, like Tom Dixon!) The principles of IKEA Hacking hold true: Accessibility, Affordability, Community. Join me for a workshop on optimizing IKEA boxes: Sektion, BESTA or Billy. What’s my secret to making it look like a million bucks?

Talk 1: Socio-Economic paradigm shifts affecting Design

  • Automation and Universal Basic Income are two concepts currently playing on a loop across the political spectrum and business forums alike — a threat or a benefit to the field of design?
  • What does it mean when I say “poor is the new rich” in advanced democracies? Purposeful existence, universal access to education and healthcare; social stability through accessible labour. Social media: the great equalizer of the classes. Are we designing for the 1% or the 99%? Who designs real furniture and for whom?

Talk 2: Neurodiversity in the workplace

  • ‘NEURODIVERSITY’ is a new term that will surely shake-up traditional workplaces: how non-mainstream thinkers and creators are enriching design.
  • Self-employment’s benefits for the non-conformists: keeping your own hours, setting your own schedule, picking rewarding projects.
  • Barriers to inclusion and applying Universal Design Principles to workplace accommodation.

Talk 3: Make Sektion work for you and Beyond BESTA

  • Optimize the use of those boxes — intro 2 designing with IKEA. Which box is best?
  • What are good hardware set-ups? Cost vs. function vs. design.
  • Add custom elements and make it look like a million bucks — what to consider and where to source custom elements.
  • Q+A: Submit your design challenge, and we will work it out during the presentation!
