Presented by industrial designer Jurģis Miķēns, ‘W.E.’ is an exploration of the dialogue between people and their surroundings. The show consists of two projects that span product design and installation art. Observing and identifying the possibilities of human/object interactions can result in the creation of more meaningful products, environments, and experiences.
Jurģis spent his thesis year at the Ontario College of Art & Design University (2014-2015) tackling the perception of discomfort and unapproachability in public parks after dark. Public parks are created to be functional, safe, and usable. Daytime hours see parks and public spaces being used to their full potential; night reveals a different environment entirely. Scattered and largely empty, their appearance is punctuated by stagnant and impersonal artificial lighting. Although functional, existing park lighting does not cultivate the sense of a welcoming environment.
‘Project: Enthrall’ is an interactive street lamp that challenges the conventional design of public lighting by placing the required utilitarian functionality into an interactive, visually compelling, designed object. Could we reimagine parks and public spaces at night as playgrounds of light?
‘Project: Wall’ is the continuing expression of how humans can exist and interact with the surrounding environments. Branching away from the utility of public parks, ‘Project: Wall’ is an interactive sculpture that plays on a sense of space and the relationship with its audience. Presented in a playful manner, and open to interpretation, it is a conversation on what it means to be connected. Jurģis employs a metaphor of being a part of something bigger, a significant piece of a larger, unseen mechanism, where any action elicits a reaction.
Creating intimate and meaningful experiences that engage and challenge the senses is of continuing interest to Jurģis’ design practice. The exhibition ‘W.E.’ is just a small part of this fascination, an invitation for the viewer to enter and experience.
