Interdisciplinary artist Deepikah RB shares how she decided to move her practice away from machines and into a world of wonderment.
How would you describe your profession and your practice?
I am an Indian interdisciplinary artist based in Tkaronto (Toronto). I engage with more-than-human entities like algae, kombucha, and more, through speculative art to express issues related to gender, ecology and healing.
Has your work changed over the course of your career?
I used to create motion graphics for television at one point in my career. Being close to screens inspired me to create works that transcend linear narratives.
What was your “eureka!” moment that made you realize that art/design was the route you wanted to take?
While rendering 3D files in 2020, I noticed the amount of noise and heat my machine was generating. I changed my art practice entirely to not involve machines.
Is your work inspired by anything in particular? What turns you on creatively?
The Earth, wind, water systems and their relationships with human overconsumption. Trash turns me on creatively.

Which designers or artists inspire you and why?
Too many to name but Toronto-based artist Rajni Perera is my favourite.
What is the name of the DesignTO Project you’re exhibiting in and what is the name of the piece you are sharing?
I will be speaking at the DesignTO Talk, ‘Net Positive.’

What can attendees expect to experience when hearing you?
Wonder, amazement, and a good chuckle.
How long have you been involved with DesignTO? Do you have any memories from past DesignTO Festivals you want to share?
This is my first time. I am very new to Toronto but have only heard good things about DesignTO and I am excited to finally participate.
As DesignTO gets ready to celebrate its 15th birthday, why do you think it’s important to the creative community, here as well as abroad?
I believe it is extremely important, especially now, that we communicate with one another and with every kind of person. Those with academic knowledge need to listen, while life practitioners should share ancestral earth knowledge. We all need stories of hope during climate crises because there is already too much doom.
Lastly, what random fact about yourself would you like to share with the DesignTO community?
I have super human smelling powers.
