‘Beyond Function: An OCAD U x Baycrest Exhibition’ showcases tangible product prototypes co-created with older adults living with dementia at Baycrest Terraces. Featuring work from second-year Industrial Design students in a Human-Centred Design course, the exhibition highlights thoughtful design responses shaped through close collaboration and community engagement that go beyond function to support dignity and enjoyment in older adults’ daily lives.
Over the course of a full term, students designed with the front line staff and residents onsite at Baycrest Terraces—working beyond the four walls of the university for a truly immersive, experiential learning studio. Guided by Associate Professor Ranee Lee in studio and Adjunct Professor Nadine Hare in seminar, students investigated the lived experiences of older adults and developed designs that prioritize dignity while addressing social, emotional, and cultural needs.
Special thanks to Grace Chung, Melissa Turzanski, and Fern Fabrizi at Baycrest for their generous support, and to the residents, Baycrest staff staff on the Possibilities and Assisted Living floors for their invaluable collaboration.
