‘Pressing Matters’ is the debut show for a collective of recent graduate designers. Though varied in material, scale, and sensibility, these works emerged from a shared brief: they highlight the beauty of compression-defined forms. Compression presents an opportunity to expand how we think about design and the interactivity of material.
Compression manifests everywhere. It can be intentional or incidental, a minor detail or all-encompassing. Some projects focus on the results of compression, using manufacturing techniques to guide their thinking. Others treat it as an active element in their design, allowing the user’s interaction to transform and reshape the object. ‘Pressing Matters’ presents a collection of housewares and furniture uniquely guided by compression.
