DesignTO Tours: Jones Commons

As part of our charitable fundraising efforts, join DesignTO for an exclusive tour of the Jones Commons, an adaptive reuse multiplex that is home to four residences and a creative office.  

Designed by AAmp Studio, Jones Commons transforms a familiar 1950s neighborhood medical clinic in Toronto’s Greektown into a mixed-use building that extends the life of a longstanding community landmark. Located just off the Danforth, the project reflects AAmp’s approach to adaptive reuse, extending the life of existing buildings while reinforcing the character and continuity of the neighbourhood.

Rather than replacing the existing structure, the project embraces its history, preserving what exists while introducing a modern addition that establishes a dialogue between old and new. Brightly coloured glazed brick and a carefully considered palette of materials create connections across the original building and its addition, allowing each to retain its own identity while contributing to a cohesive architectural whole.

Today, Jones Commons is home to four residences and a creative office. Anne-Marie Armstrong, Principal of AAmp Studio and owner of Jones Commons, will share the story behind the building’s transformation, the design decisions that shaped its evolution, and the opportunities and challenges of adapting existing buildings for contemporary use, from the unique perspective of both the architect and client. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the creative office and the new principal residence, experiencing firsthand the relationship between the original structure and its contemporary interventions.

Continuing Education

Guests that log professional continuing education hours can request a certificate for 1 hour of structured learning after they attend the tour.
