DesignTO is seeking an Assistant Coordinator to support our Volunteer Program. 

About DesignTO:

DesignTO is a charitable arts organization that believes design can create a sustainable, just, and joyful world. DesignTO organizes the annual DesignTO Festival, Canada’s largest celebration of design, forming Toronto’s design week every January.

About the role:

As an Assistant Coordinator, you will work closely with the Executive Director to help plan, coordinate, and deliver the Festival’s volunteer program. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in festival production and volunteer management. 

In the lead-up to the Festival, you will work on volunteer coordination and communications, and during the Festival, you will support a team of 100+ volunteers. You will gain experience working within a charitable arts organization, connect with artists, designers, and industry professionals, and build your network within Toronto’s design community. 

This volunteer role is mostly remote, but includes being on-site at select Festival events, assisting with volunteer coordination and ensuring smooth volunteer scheduling throughout.

Responsibilities include:
  • Supporting volunteer coordination and communications
  • Maintaining volunteer records and supporting post-Festival reporting
  • Assisting with shift scheduling and management, including use of scheduling software
  • Updating and maintaining key documents such as critical paths, role descriptions, and role postings
  • Supporting volunteer training sessions and creating volunteer handouts
  • Assisting with on-site volunteer coordination during the Festival, including the Launch Party
  • Providing general problem-solving and customer service support 
We’re looking for someone who:
  • Is enthusiastic about volunteerism
  • Is organized and detail-oriented, with strong communication skills
  • Is comfortable using Google Drive, Docs, and Spreadsheets
  • Has access to a cell phone
  • Is able to travel within Toronto 
  • Can commit approximately 1 to 4 hours per week from August to February, with additional time leading up to the Festival
  • Is available in Toronto during the DesignTO Festival (January 22–31, 2027)
