Designer/architect Jordi Lopez Aguilo’s designs interact with the user and make you think a bit.
How would you describe your profession and your practice?
Each project – lighting, objects and furniture – involves a methodical process that emphasizes both material and in-depth research. With the constant challenge of revealing the “soul” behind objects, I hope to create honest and timeless designs with a life of their own.
Has your work changed over the course of your career?
Yes, I started my career working as an architect before starting my own studio for furniture and lighting design.
What was your “eureka!” moment that made you realize that art/design was the route you wanted to take?
In 2012, when I received an award during Belgrade’s design week; Konstantin Grcic was head of the jury.

Is your work inspired by anything in particular? What turns you on creatively?
Listening to music and travelling are my main sources of inspiration.
Which designers or artists inspire you and why?
Donald Judd, James Turrell. Their body of work is on another level, it transcends time and space.
What is the name of the DesignTO Project you’re exhibiting in and what is the name of the piece you are sharing?
My Equis Lounge Chair is part of the prototype exhibition, ‘Surface Impressions,’ held at the Umbra store.

What can attendees expect to experience when seeing your work?
The bond between the piece and the user. I aim to create designs that interact with the user and make you think a bit.
How long have you been involved with DesignTO?
My first time participating in DesignTO was in 2024. I was very honoured to have received an award for Best Product in the ‘Lucid Ideas’ exhibition.
As DesignTO gets ready to celebrate its 15th birthday, why do you think it is important to the creative community, here as well as abroad?
As a European, I feel really honoured to be part of this event.
‘Surface Impressions’ is just one of over 100 free window installations, exhibitions and events at the 2025 DesignTO Festival, January 24 – February 2, 2025. Visit the Festival Schedule to learn about these projects and more.
