‘Air Assemblies’ brings together both new and existing works by Studio Rat—the Montreal- and Toronto-based creative practice of Dominique Di Libero and Emily Allan—to explore how their reclaimed inflatable structures, made from discarded single-use plastics, propose a new form of soft infrastructure by pushing against the boundaries of the built environment from the inside out.
The exhibition features documentation of past projects alongside the duo’s distinctive process, which blends advanced digital modelling with craft-based fabrication. Scattered throughout an immersive installation of undulating inflatable tubes are models from their broader portfolio of inhabitable sculptures. Together, these elements form a fugitive interior landscape that imagines a novel kind of public space—one built from salvaged and reused materials.
By reframing air as a central medium in architecture, this experimental installation offers a glimpse into sustainable structures of the future. It gestures toward urgently needed spaces that not only reveal our shared, collective breath but also offer meaningful shelter in response to today’s mounting environmental crises.
