DesignTO Tours: Frum-Lockhart House

As part of our charitable fundraising efforts, join DesignTO for an exclusive tour of the Frum-Lockhart House, a living laboratory reflecting many layers of work by multiple architects.  

The journey began with a Don Mills starter home designed by Yu-Sing Jung for Barbara and Murray Frum. Subsequently, the couple worked with architect Ron Thom to turn the residence from the street toward the ravine. As well as adding several rooms, Thom created a landscape of water and terraces linking inside and out. Howard Sutcliffe was a recent graduate working in the office of Ron Thom and often accompanied the architect to the Don Mills house. 

After Thom died in 1986, Howard Sutcliffe and Brigitte Shim were asked by the Frums to design a garden pavilion and reflecting pool on the property, which is situated on the edge of a Toronto ravine. Wood, water, and weathering steel were woven together to create a forest pavilion. Nature is engaged, transformed, and inhabited to create a place of repose, pleasure, and reflection. This project received a Governor General’s Award for Architecture in 1992. Over the past 30 years, Shim and Sutcliffe have realized many interventions and additions to the residence working with Murray Frum and Nancy Lockhart. Each new element reinforces the powerful connections between the home and its verdant ravine landscape while, at the same time, respectfully updating Thom’s work.

Experience this special space by joining an extended tour led by homeowner Nancy Lockhart, architect Brigitte Shim and DesignTO’s Artistic Director Deborah Wang.

6:00 PM – House Tour Begins, with an approximate run time of 90 minutes

Nearest intersection: Bayview Avenue and York Mills Road, Toronto. The exact address for the house tour will be shared with ticket holders. Please respect the privacy of the homeowners by keeping their address confidential. 

Please note that no exterior or interior photography is permitted.

Continuing Education

Guests that log professional continuing education hours can request a certificate for 1.5 hours of structured learning after they attend the tour.
