‘Drawed’ Through’ is a local term in Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland & Labrador, used to describe when someone or something is particularly well put together; wearing one’s best clothing, using the finest tableware at dinner, putting your best foot forward.
Myles Burry grew up on the north side of Bonavista Bay in the town of Wesleyville; surrounded by salt-of-the-earth fisherman and fish plant workers. Life was simple, but there was a huge amount of respect and dignity people carried for their homes, spaces and objects. The vernacular architecture of the place was simple in form and construction, but had a reverence for decoration, colour and detail; this was expressed through elaborate wallpapers, finely crafted wooden trims, and defining space through muted pastels and bold primary colours.
Kate Golding was drawn to the south side of Bonavista Bay, making the town of Bonavista her permanent home in May of 2023. She had an initial love of pattern design inspired by her granny’s 1970’s toile de jouy curtains and the textiles in the family caravan in England. Her love for Newfoundland & Labrador grew after an initial research trip where she was enchanted by the provinces’ beautiful and rugged landscape filled with its many florals, faunas and icebergs.
This piece blends together the two artists’ interests of Newfoundland’s architecture and landscape to produce a custom mirrored and wallpapered art piece comprising 27 mirrors. The mirrors are adorned with floral wallpapers, traditional Newfoundland paint colours, and symbols used in the decoration and details of local buildings.
Woodworking completed by Bonavista Creative Workshop in Bonavista, Newfoundland & Labrador.
