‘Joyous Shindig’ is a hanging installation composed of blown glass elements wrapped and suspended with recycled leather detailing. The work celebrates the vibrant, resilient spirit of the queer community—an act of joyous defiance and merrymaking in the face of those who seek to oppress 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
Playful in both colour and form, the piece embodies the diversity and dynamism of individual identities, while the recycled leather harnesses—hand-stitched with ruffled embellishments—unite the forms into a collective whole. Through this interplay of fragility and strength, ‘Joyous Shindig’ radiates solidarity, celebration, and unapologetic joy.
The use of recycled leather is both a material and conceptual choice. Once discarded, these fragments are given new life through the process of cutting, stitching, and shaping—echoing the ways queer communities continuously reimagine and reclaim spaces, identities, and histories. The leather supports and cradles the glass, offering strength and softness in equal measure.
Suspended in space, ‘Joyous Shindig’ becomes a gathering of forms—a shimmering dance of difference and togetherness. It invites viewers to share in the joy, defiance, and solidarity that sustain queer communities, and to revel in the beauty of collective celebration, where transformation and renewal are cause for pride.
