Michèle Guevara’s installation, ‘Nature Textures’, presents a series of weavings that focus on the environment’s fragility and enduring vitality. Each piece translates a specific moment of mindful observation into an intricate handwoven textile that invites viewers to engage with our natural world.
‘Nature Textures’ offers some respite to the monochrome greys of winter in the city, with its warm tones and interlacements of yarns that reflect nature, inviting contemplation and to evoke memories: a walk in the forest, time by a lake, a cherished moment from the past, a dream of an imagined place. It also aims to spark conversations about climate change, and our role in protecting the environment. Especially pertinent when the instability of weather patterns, floods and forest fires are a constant reminder of nature’s fragility.
“Through photographs that capture a detail of my surroundings, I am inspired by the inherent patterns and layers of colour that emerge. I find these natural compositions to be intrinsically perfect, with patterns, structure and colour in harmonious dialogue. Through choosing specific yarns and material combinations, I aim to evoke a moment in time, a memory, an experience of profound interconnection with nature.”

These weavings hope to invite reflection on themes like impermanence and the beauty of imperfection, and to stimulate insight when confronted with the reality of the current climate crisis fostering a new appreciation for our environment by representing both its raw beauty and inherent vulnerability.
Each piece is handwoven using a TC2 Digital Jacquard Loom and a combination of natural organic fibres like cotton, chenille, linen and silk.
Michèle Guevara is a Toronto-based fibre artist currently focused on using newer weaving technologies to expand her practice. Her work explores concepts related to ecology, impermanence, eco-psychology and our interconnection with Nature.
