Pattern is everywhere. In art and design, it can be a motif, a way to organize or a compositional device. Five installations and exhibitions at Gladstone House respond to the idea of pattern.
In a 2-person exhibition, Amy K. Fitzgerald’s layered abstract compositions are influenced by the patterns of quilting and rug-making. Georgina Lee Walker’s paintings of slightly surreal built spaces are anchored by surface pattern.
Elsewhere, Krystal Ball takes inspiration from traditional patchwork and quilting to explore consumption, waste and identity.
Leila Fatemi brings the sacred patterns of Islamic geometry into new, contemporary contexts using photography, collage, printmaking and stitching.
Phuong Nguyen’s mixed media works combine oil painting, weaving and carving, using patterns as decorative, technical and conceptual elements.
Jennifer Coghill’s jacket and quilt refer to the pattern-making methods of the seamstress or tailor, using unconventional materials.
While the artists’ works are formally disparate, they make links to tradition and show a compelling sense of the hand of craftsmanship as they address personal and contemporary issues.
