Through the installation ‘Plasticity,’ Shira Yavor challenges the normalized use of plastic (polyester) in everyday fashion. By pushing this material to its extreme, she created corset-like bodices from acrylic plastic sheets, transforming them into fluid, wearable art. The pieces were laser-cut and heat-formed on a dress form, sculpted to follow the curves of the female figure. The rapid heat-forming process yielded unique results for each bodice – some conformed perfectly, while others bubbled and pulled away, giving rise to wavy, fluid forms that defy the conventional characteristics of plastic as firm, static, and rigid.
These bodices float in space, evoking a futuristic, dream-like ambiance. The project invites viewers to think critically about the materials used in fashion. It presents plastic as a medium to be used sparingly for one-of-a-kind art pieces rather than mass-produced fashion.
The project can be viewed from the window of Storm Horse Tattoo at any time as well as from inside the shop during the regular opening hours (11 am-7 pm daily, except for Monday).
