“‘Portrait of Mother and Son’ is the third quilt in my ‘Motherhood Series’, a growing collection of quilts inspired by my first year as a new mother. This piece will depict the early stages of my pregnancy using design characteristics common in the modern quilting movement, such as minimalism and graphic areas of colour.
The placement of colour within the woven circles creates the optical illusion of a circle radiating outward — evolving. They serve to show that as my son was growing, I, too, was growing into my new role as a mother. Quilting techniques used in the piece include traditional piecing, foundation paper piecing, machine quilting, and hand quilting.”
