When moving through space, we are embodied in the environment with many sensory systems acting together to perceive and interpret our world. One of those senses, the auditory system, plays a large role in how we interpret space and the effects can be compounding when not considered within a design. This installation by Mathew Garland aims to showcase how public spaces can be designed to support people who identify as highly sensitive, specifically through the aural sense. While spaces should be designed holistically, if we isolate a sense, we are able to understand its intricacies more deeply. The installation is designed with a four speaker layout, with two separate sonic environments presented within the space. This layout allows the audience to move around the representation of the spaces, experiencing a noisy reverberant environment, compared with a space where the design has been altered acoustically.
