Futil Studio is proud to reveal ‘Tactil’, a compelling collection of objects and lighting that marries the ancient art of scagliola with cutting-edge technology.
The collection marks a pivot for co-founder Alexandre Berthiaume, a Montreal-based artist and designer with a Master’s degree in architecture. Berthiaume, whose career has fluidly navigated industrial design and public art since establishing Futil Studio in 2008, now asserts his role as an emerging master craftsman.
His process is a bold, hybrid approach. It begins with large-format 3D printing to generate complex, biomorphic forms—shapes inspired by the sensual fluidity of the natural world. He then elevates these structures by personally applying and reinventing the traditional scagliola technique. By incorporating natural pigments, Berthiaume ensures that while the pieces may be produced in a series, each lamp, furniture piece, or object remains totally unique.
The works in the Tactil collection are utilitarian sculptures. They possess an undeniable, organic sensuality, capturing an essence of movement that dialogues directly with space and the senses. Berthiaume’s practice celebrates the imperfection and raw power of nature, delivering an aesthetic that is both deeply rooted in craftsmanship and resolutely contemporary.
