‘The Moon is a Harsh Mistress’ is a series of large-scale glowing light sculptures traced in pastel LED neon by Molly Valentine Dierks. This series pulls from photos from travels across China, Japan, and South Korea—as well as Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, manga characters, and Disney Princess cartoons. The final forms contain a sort of ‘stilled wildness’…things dripping, flowing, exploding, or flying.
“This series is also a reaction to recent events in my country (the USA) as a woman—where I firmly believe time is seasonal or cyclical, rest is important, and we are interconnected to each other and the earth. As a designer and public artist, my goal is to create ‘healing’ spaces that invite others to revel in the visceral qualities of form, light, and line… similar to how we appreciate the rhythms of nature, the wheeling of the stars, or the phase of the moon.
With the backdrop of the beautiful pieces in DesignRepublic, I designed these glowing sculptures to create more moments to connect from an organic place… that is sensuous, interconnected, beautiful, and mysterious.”
