‘Within Bloom’ is a series of eight hand-punched yarn tapestries by Madeleine Bailey that magnify botanical cross sections at a large scale. Through buds, stems, and flowers rendered in fibre, the work reveals the intricate architectures that lie beneath the surface of natural forms. Each composition isolates and expands a moment of organic complexity, turning an unseen interior into both specimen and landscape.
The series includes cross sections of caper and morning glory buds, as well as the stems of yellow pitcher plant, rock rose, and trumpet creeper. The two largest works bisect foxglove and scotch broom flowers, translating their delicate anatomies into textured, topographic surfaces.
Created with acrylic yarn on monk’s cloth, each piece takes between 10 and 50 hours to complete. Variations in yarn type and pile height produce subtle shifts in depth and texture that emphasize the physicality of the medium.
By abstracting and enlarging the interior worlds of plants, ‘Within Bloom’ invites reflection on the complexity and interconnection within living systems, showing how structure, texture, and pattern shape the quiet intelligence of nature.
