Festival Features: ‘On the Table’

TO DO Festival Features is a shortlist of 10 events, exhibitions, and/or window installations selected by a jury. The criteria for selection is entirely up to each juror, while considering caliber of the work or event program, and appeal to a general public and specialist audience. This year’s jurors include Corrie Jackson (RBC Art), Shaun Moore (MADE Design), and Claire Pijoulat (WantedDesign NYC).

‘On the Table’ is unique among this year’s Festival Features, as the exhibition is curated by artist collective Aisle 4. The politically-engaged artist project incites critical and constructive dialogue surrounding gender-based violence and sexual harassment in the public space.

For ‘On the Table’, the collective commissioned four artists – Jesse Harris, Aisha Sasha John, Hazel Meyer, and Lido Pimienta – to create original works with messaging that illuminates body politics and sensitized language, while advocating for respectful conduct and safe spaces. Printed on coasters and distributed to participating bars and restaurants, the collective will literally place the artwork “on the table” during TO DO 2017, encouraging conversation around the topic among the patrons in these public spaces.

Juror Corrie Jackson on the exhibition: “Aisle 4 continues to be a leading voice in contemporary curatorial dialogue with this initiative that places the importance of conversation around sexual assault and safe space truly ‘on the table.’ Not to be missed, and hopefully hard to miss, these coasters/artists multiples are collectable – so take one with you to carry on the exchange.”

‘On the Table’ is on view from Jan. 16 – 22, 2016 at various locations around Bloordale, including the Wenona Craft Beer Lodge. Visit the exhibition listing for details.
